Waste of Motion

Movement which does not add value to the product. People, machinery/equipment or paperwork (to name a few) can have excessive movement. Unwanted operator’s movement between workstations is also a waste.

Causes for Motion:

Ø Ineffective equipment, office and plant layout

Ø Lack of Visual controls

            (Printed schedules, production plans, etc.)

Ø Poor process documentation

Ø Poor work place organization

Ø Improper structural arrangement

Ø Machine layout is as per the work processes 

Ø Atmosphere is not labor-friendly (too hot/cold)

Ø Unsafe work conditions (without PPE)

Ø Identify, eliminate, and control workplace through operators

Ø Spaghetti diagram

Ø Ergonomics (Scientific workstation)

Ø Reduce the turns, bends, searches, picks for an operation
