Six Sigma projects are performed industry wide for part-to-part variation reduction methodology, which indirectly controls the rejection and reduction non-valve added activities in industries. Usually Six Sigma projects are consisted to be more technically challenged , it require lot of skilled manpower and team leader to guide the team in right path to achieve the set out targets in any six sigma project .

Usually Six Sigma projects are taken with timespan of 4months – 6 months. Some in-case may extend but not more than 8 months. The following picture shows the Six Sigma project controls flows and knowledge level need for each members in a project.

·       Master Black Belt(MBB)

 Master Black Belts are the mentor/ leaders who actually controls or guide the team members and direct groups of Black Belts and Six Sigma teams through various problems methods and reviewing. Additionally, Master Black Belts are responsible for the strategy and training of Black Belt level practitioners.

Responsibility of Master Black Belt:

  • o   Owns Six Sigma deployment plan and project results for their organization
  • o   Ensures rigor in Six Sigma execution
  • o   Responsible for BB certification
  • o   Owns the Six Sigma project hopper and processes for the organization
  • o   Supervisor for DMAIC BB’s; may be supervisor for DFSS BB’s
  • o   Influences General Manager / Managing Director and Champions to support organizational    engagement
  • o   Leads culture change – communicates Six Sigma methodology and tools
  • o   Leverages best practices
  • o   Supports Champions in managing project hoppers and project prioritization; Checks projects for alignment with division / subsidiary / staff goals
  • o   Ensures that project progress check, gate review, and closing processes meet corporate requirements and meet division needs
  • o   Develops BB talent and builds organizational capability through BB’s and GB’s
  • o   Supports timely Six Sigma project completion
  • o   Communicates, teaches, and coaches

·       Black Belt(BB)

Black Belts are usually give training and control the progress of Six Sigma project in industry. Sometimes Black Belt holds may act as project head or Project champion (depends upon the organization structure). Black Belt receives the highest level of training in the statistical tools of Six Sigma. Black Belts, as a rule, develop the plans for Six Sigma project implementation. Their responsibilities include creating project plans, leading cross-functional projects and directing team members, including Green and Yellow Belts. 


Responsibility of  Black Belt:

  • o   Proficient in Six Sigma tools and their application
  • o   Leads/supports high impact projects to bottom line full-time
  • o   Directly supports MBB’s culture change activities – communicates Six Sigma methodology and tools
  • o   Shares best practices
  • o   Mentors and coaches Green Belts to optimize functioning of Six Sigma teams operating in organization
  • o   Facilitates, communicates, and teaches
  • o   Looks for applicability of tools and methods to areas outside of current focus
  • o   Supports Process Owners and Champions in hopper processes (as assigned)

·       Green Belt(GB) and Yellow Belt

Green Belts report to a Black Belt and lead process improvement teams . Their time should be devoted to working on Six Sigma projects and solve some basic level problems , usually within their own functional areas.  Green Belts receive training on DMAIC methodology, statistical tools, proper data collection and analysis of the data collected. A Yellow Belt should have a basic understanding of Six Sigma, statistical tools and DMAIC methodology. Yellow Belts are often members of the workforce recognized for their skill, knowledge and experience with the process in question. 

Responsibility of Green/Yellow Belt:

  • o   Leads and/or participates on Six Sigma project teams
  • o   Identifies project opportunities within their organization
  • o   Know and applies Six Sigma methodologies and tools appropriately
  • o   Participates with project leader
  • o   Provides expertise on the process being addressed
  • o   Performs action items and tasks as identified
  • o   Uses DMAIC tools in everyday problem solving
  • o   Subject matter expert
